Are you longing for another way?

Updated: Aug 15

If you are anything like the many people who tell me their stories everyday, then you are longing to slow down and do less. You are probably feeling stressed out simply by the sheer amount of information you have to process daily, always being on (and online), and probably wearing multiple hats (work, parenting, care-giving, etc), and facing the ongoing existential crisis being a human in the 21st century.

As I sat down in front of my computer this morning to work-a work which I love, by the way-I felt a clear sense of overwhelm and resistance.  I tuned into my body and gave myself permission to feel a bit more deeply the psycho-physical states that were making themselves present.  In the past I would have tried to push past them, ignore them, or probably judge myself in some way.

I rarely do that now. Instead I listen and take myself seriously. That is, I do not judge my bodily sensations/symptoms and mental-emotional states. I take them seriously.

So when I tuned in a bit deeper this morning, just listening and being present with myself, my body told me exactly what it was needing:

Slow down (again). Do less (again). Rest (even more). Sleep (even more). Walk (even more, even more slowly). Do nothing. Allow time to digest and integrate all you have lived over the last few months. Write. Rest.

My whole system relaxed as I imagined this scene.

(This relaxation is always a good sign I am on the right track. I have learned to respect deeply whatever causes this bodily response.)

The scene did not include: marketing, advertising, lots of time in front of the computer, achieving numbers, strategizing, making posts, or reaching goals.  All the things I should be doing.

So what did I do today?

Exactly what my body is asking of me.

And as for the work I should be doing? I will get to that, soon.

After attending to what my body is asking of me.

In fact, once I let myself really feel what my body (aka - mouthpiece for the Soul) needed and grant myself permission to slow down instead of ramp up this morning, I felt inspired to write this blog post (which, funnily enough, is technically work-although it doesn't feel like ;)).

So if you are longing for another way, try tuning into your body, right here and now and give yourself permission to feel whatever is present.

Ask your body what it really wants and needs? What is it longing for?

And then do it. Even just a little bit. Even just for a few minutes.

Your Soul will thank you for listening.

For honoring it's needs and not only the needs of the frenetic nonstop outer world with it's insatiable appetite for our time and energy.

It is as simple as taking yourself and how you feel seriously.
